183 Miles in June

I am not a cyclist.

Well I would have said that in the middle of May.

I decided that in June I was going to try to get in 100 miles by riding everyday and to church when I could since I live so close in an attempt to get into shape enough so that I could ride to work on a regular basis.

It was a lot easier to get to 100 miles than I thought it would be. I did spend a few long mornings on the MKT Trail . The break down of my miles ended up being 132 on “the road” and 51 miles on the Katy Trial.

Now I have the bug and am looking at buying a “better bike”. Hope fully something like this.

June was a “great” weather month with me being able to ride comfortably every night but with the weather being 100+ degrees today and for the next couple weeks I dont know if I am going to be able to keep up this pace.

We took Landon to see “Cars 2:The Movie About ‘Mater” today for his first movie in a theater. He really liked it and sat through most of it like a big kid. I dont think we will likely do it again anytime soon but it was a blast.

CPOD

I am spending the day today with high school kids from around the state taking part in a week long camp at Linn State called Computer Professions on Demand.

I have been involved with this program for the last 13 years first as a student at TSA (Technology Scholars Academy) and then a mentor at BITI (Business Something Something) and now I get to sit on the career panel and talk to students about what doing network security is really about.

I have really enjoyed supporting this group and working with them throughout the years.

Why I love being a dad…

Why I hate love being a dad…

He always has to do everything I do.

I dont get to hang out with my friends as much as I would like.

I never get to sleep in on the weekends.

He always wants to tell me something.

Don’t measure yourself by what you have accomplished, but by what you should have accomplished with your ability.

The Flood of 1993

They are saying the flood on the Missouri River this year could be as bad as it was during 1993. I was 13 years old during the last “great” flood and was living in South St.Louis city at the time.

My Grandparents house wasn’t flooded but we did lose electricity so we stayed in a hotel for a week with a pool somewhere in South County.

I remember Budweiser stopped making beer and started to can water.
I remember walking down to South Broadway and getting a can and saving it.
(I dont remember what I did with it.)
I remember walking to River Des Peres as it was getting ready to top its levee.
(I remember calling it River De Poop. (Hey I was 13.).)

I remember eating steaks for three straight days out of the deep freezer so they didn’t spoil when we lost electricity.
I remember getting free Nachos and Soda at the 7-11 because they had lost electricity.
I remember a sense of community I didn’t feel again until I moved to a small town.
I remember wishing it was over.

I now live in a small town across the Missouri River from Jefferson City and there is no chance of my house personally being flooded. There is a really likelihood of me being inconvenienced going to work if they are right.

Maybe if they are right I’ll take a few vacation days and stay with my Grandma as see if I cant lend a hand in South City.

Happy Birthday Landon

My son turns two years old today. He has stopped being a baby this past year and has started being a kid. It is amazing how smart he is and how fast he has grown.
Here are some of my favorite pictures of him from this past year.

We complain we have lost the true meaning of Christmas or Easter but I think the commercialization of those Holidays pale in comparison to the Holiday we will celebrate Monday.

What is this Monday?

A great day to get a deal on a new TV?

The perfect time to buy a new Car?

The unofficial start of summer?

The day to fire up the grill and have family over?

Actually Monday is the most important holiday in America.  Seriously.  It is a day set aside to honor our fallen military members that give us the freedom we enjoy today. Very few of us do it.  We don’t like to think about the true cost of our freedom.

The true cost of freedom is 1,343,812 American lives lost in combat since 1775.That’s the number I am going to focus on this weekend 1,343,812. Not 15% off. Not 5 hot dogs. Not shooting under 100 on the golf course. Not a 3 day weekend. 1,343,812.

Photos of the storm…

We had a tornado warning at the Capitol today and the house photographer snapped these pictures of the storm approaching.
