Derbycon

This weekend I was lucky enough to spend a few days in Louisville, Kentucky at Derbycon 2012 speaking about Security Awareness.   I don’t go to a ton of cons (ok maybe I do) but I thought this one was well managed and very entertaining.

Dave Kennedy has to be one of the most genuinely nice and caring people in the business.  Hanging out with him was one of highlights of the con.

I also spent a lot of time talking to the MiniPwner guys and am really digging their project. If you get a chance you should check it out and build your own.

iOS6 and ad tracking.

If you get a new iPhone5 or upgraded to iOS 6 today the first thing you should do change this setting.

Settings > General > About > Advertising > Limit Ad Tracking> On.

It limits the use of your Advertising Identifier that are used to track you via in-app ads.

If you are an average of the five people you spend the most time with … are they people that challenge you?

When your 3 year old wants to help you mow the grass you have to let him.

Crisscrossing the state talking about security…

This week I have put a lot of miles on the Jeep talking to people about the importance of security awareness. Monday I spoke at SecureWorldExpo in St.Louis and on Thursday I had the pleasure of speaking at the TechITOutExpo in Springfield.

It is important for security people to remember that no matter how much time you spend being a “heads down” security person you will never be truly secure until you can get buy in and support of your end users to help you secure your network.

Time to fix the dryer.

Why I think fall started today…

This morning I posted “Happy First Day of Fall” on Facebook and I got people telling me that fall doesn’t really start until September 22nd.

If you believe that seasons are are determined by the exact times of transit of the sun over the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn for the solstices and the times of the sun’s transit over the equator for the equinoxes you are correct that Fall doesn’t start for 21 days.

If you think seasons are determined by the weather with Summer being the hottest quarter of the year and winter the coldest quarter of the year then Fall started today. I am in the meteorological season camp because it lines up more closely with the seasons I think months fall in.

Here is a chart with the average temperatures in Jefferson City to show my point.
